Buenas madrugadas a todos/as: A estas horas de la noche del inicio de este sabado os quiero dejar esta entrevista que he realizado a una autora de la cual debo de decir que con solo leer la sinopsis me enamore del libro,en cuanto vi la portada lo puse en mi punto de mira, hace unos meses y podeis ver en el jquery la imagen de este que me ha cautivado, espero que os guste la autora y que la deis una oportunidad en cuanto salga a la venta.

-Would you tell us if any of your books will be published in Spain?
I hope so! Unfortunately, it's not something the author of a book has a lot of control over. ABOVE, my first novel, isn't coming out until April, and it's sold translation rights in a few countries (Germany and Brazil) so there's a chance a Spanish publisher might be interested. But until then, all I can do is cross my fingers.
-I have seen on your website since 2001 until now have published widely,tell us how you got your first book published,Did you contract a literary agent? Did you gain a contest? Did you send it directly to a publishing house? Tell us your history...
ABOVE found a home in probably the most standard, boring way possible, actually! Like you mentioned, I've been publishing short stories and poetry in magazines for years, but novels are an entirely different business and I had no real experience there. So I looked at the basic advice given to new writers: find the literary agents who represent work that's like yours, write a professional query letter and synopsis, read all their guidelines very carefully, and pop it in the mail.
It worked pretty quickly: I expected to have to query several different groups of agents over the summer, but within six weeks I had signed with my agent, Caitlin Blasdell, and was revising ABOVE to her notes to get it ready for editors.
Once that was done, it was the same story: Caitlin sent it out to editors she felt would like it, and we waited. By April 2009, we had our acceptance letter.
So like I said: a very standard, kind of boring path to publication!
-What does mean to write for Leah Bobet?
Different things on different days. Sometimes it's just a job I have to do; sometimes it's like there's nothing in the world but me, the words, and maybe the keyboard, and it's transcendent. Either way, it's one of those fundamental things that makes me myself. If I didn't do it, I'd be a very different person. Even though it's a bit of a flaky answer, it's like breathing or eating: it's what I do. Dogs bark, birds chirp, and I write.
-Which book would you recommend to someone who wants to start reading Leah Bobet?
Well, there's only the one so far! So I guess if you wanted to read something book-length, ABOVE is it. But for people who are interested in short stories, both "Stay", in Chilling Tales, which is an anthology of Canadian literary horror fiction, and "Bell, Book, and Candle" in Clockwork Phoenix, a fantasy anthology, are good places to start. "Displaced Persons", which is still in the archives at Strange Horizons (at http://www.strangehorizons.com/2004/20040802/displaced-f.shtml ) is also a quick and pretty strong piece: it's been reprinted a couple times, the most recently in an Australian high school reader, and taught in some university courses.
-Above: Is your your next publication in April 2012 and will also be published in Brazil and Germany,If you could describe your novel in a phrase ,That phrase would be?
It's about a boy who lives underground, a girl with bee wings, war crimes, revisionist history, and how far you can go to save the one you love.
-About the lovely and great the cover: Can you chose it?is one of the characters?What can you tell us about it?
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!) authors don't get to choose their own book covers: it's something a publisher's art department works hard on with an artist. Occasionally they'd ask me a question or two (if Ariel's hair was curly or straight, or how I'd pictured the wings looking when writing the book) but mostly, the art department and the artist, Nathalia Suellen, worked it up together and I found out afterwards. It was a good surprise; it's kind of amazing!
The girl on the cover is one of the characters: Ariel, the girl that the novel's protagonist, Matthew, is in love with. She shapeshifts into a honeybee when she's frightened or upset, and when she turns back into a girl, the wings are the last thing to go: they grow long with her and fall out of her back.
-How did you come the idea from Above (a dream...)?What kind of history we can read?
There were three or four elements that came together to form the idea for ABOVE. The first was reading an essay in Eli Clare's Exile and Pride; it was coursework for a philosophy class in the third year of my university degree. The author was describing how his disability was diagnosed, and there's a paragraph about having to stand, barely dressed and in pain, under bright lights for what felt like forever while the doctor used the diagnosis to teach medical students. It's one of the most effective pieces of writing I've ever read: it's full of shame and display and hurt, and it hit me right between the eyes.
-The second thing was me getting kind of annoyed with the whole cliche of outcasts living underground and how it's treated in fiction and TV. For one, there are lots of people who'd have better reasons to want to live outside of society in a safe place, a place where they weren't marginalized or discriminated against, not just people with imaginary mutations. And living underground wouldn't be fun or easy: so many TV shows had reliable technology and marble floors and people who were suspiciously clean living in secret. Really, you'd be stealing canned food all the time and every bad cold would turn into pneumonia.
-The third thing was something I'd been wondering for a while: when you stop trying to save someone from themself. When constantly bailing someone out, saying it was okay, being supportive and taking time to help didn't actually mean they'd get better, but that they'd just pull you into trouble that neither of you could get out of.
Those three things came together once I finally got a hint of Matthew's narrative voice, and while a lot of other issues came into the book later -- for example, making sure that every single character who appears was discriminated against in some way, to explore all the things we do to each other -- that was enough for a start.
-What was the most difficult of Above:characterization, documentation, dialogue, a good beginning or the end?
Actually, some of the emotional content! Some very hard things happen in ABOVE, and some very bad things, and some of them I really didn't want to do to the characters. Some of them just hit a little too close to home for me. Either way, I had to sort out a lot of my own feelings to write the book cleanly and right.
Also, the cast of characters I have, where everyone has a physical disability or a mental illness or trauma of some kind, meant being very aware that while I was writing fictional characters, a lot of the people reading the book may well be seeing themselves there. It was very important to me to be careful I wasn't, without realizing, letting in thoughtless stereotypes.
-How do you fight writer's block?
It might be an unpopular answer, but I don't, really. I have a lot going on in my life: I work full-time; I edit and publish an online quarterly magazine, Ideomancer Speculative Fiction; I'm interested in local municipal politics and food policy; I knit, cook really crazy elaborate meals, go to all kinds of concerts and arts events, take bellydance classes, read a few books a week, plan scavenger hunts, and still like time to hang out with my friends and keep my apartment clean. If I'm not writing for a bit, I just figure I have nothing important to say right at that moment, and move on to another project for a little while. One of the things I've learned about my own process in the past ten years is that writing always does come back, just when it's ready. And that's okay, and nothing to worry about.
-How is it your creative process and your daily routine while you write?
My routine's not even close to daily -- see all that stuff up in the last question! But when I'm working on something, mostly I'll sit down with a cup of tea, get all my distractions out of the way (Facebook, IM, unpaid bills) so I don't have any excuses to stop, find the right music, and just go. Since I wait until the words are actually there for me, or until they're close enough that I can reach and get them without having to force it, I don't really have ways to force it. When I'm in the middle of a good project, though, I want to work on it all the time, so I squeeze writing in between the things I have to do or stay up late. Some of my best work gets done at one in the morning, or on lunch breaks.
One of the upsides of waiting until my brain's ready to write instead of going looking for words to write is that when a story or a chapter comes out, it's very clean and polished. I've already done all the work in my head, thought through why things need to be where they are, before ever putting a word down. It means I need to revise less, versus some of my friends, who can work more regularly and quickly, but have to do more drafts because they're working things out on the page. They're just two different ways of working, but that's one of the advantages.
-For the spanish readers: that you can see your news ,when can i see it?
I keep the front page of my website -- http://www.leahbobet.com -- and my Facebook fan page updated with big news, like translations or new sales. But the day-to-day stuff -- what I'm working on, fun things I cooked, thoughts on craft or politics or the like -- is on my blog, at http://leahbobet.livejournal.com. I'm also on Twitter, but that's mostly to talk with my friends, and not so much for publishing news.
-Would you like to say something to the Spanish readers?
Thanks! It says amazing things about how much you love books that you're talking about and reading them in second or third languages, and not just your first. As someone who speaks a second and third language, but very badly in both cases, that kind of dedication is really incredible, and really admirable.
(Also, I would love some recommendations for great Spanish-language novels!)

-Podrías decirnos si alguno de sus libros se publicarán en España?
Espero que sí! Por desgracia, no es algo que el autor de un libro tenga un gran control sobre. ABOVE, mi primera novela, no está saliendo hasta abril, y estan vendiendo los derechos de traducción en unos pocos países (Alemania y Brasil), así que hay probabilidad de que una editorial española pueda estar interesada. Pero hasta entonces, todo lo que puedo hacer es cruzar los dedos.
-He visto en su sitio web que desde el 2001 hasta ahora has publicado numerosos trabajos, nos puedes decir cómo llegó su primer libro a ser publicado, ¿Contrataste a un agente literario? Ganaste un concurso? ¿Has enviado directamente a una editorial? Cuéntanos tu historia ...
ABOVE ha encontrado un hogar en probablemente el más estándar,de forma aburrida posiblemente, de hecho! Al igual que mencionas, he estado publicando cuentos y poesía en revistas desde hace años, pero las novelas son un negocio completamente diferente y yo no tenía ninguna experiencia real en el país. Así que miré los consejos básicos de atención a los nuevos escritores: encontrar los agentes literarios que representan el trabajo que es como la suya, escribir una carta de consulta profesional y sinopsis, leer todos sus directrices con mucho cuidado, y el pop en el correo.
Funcionó bastante rápido: me esperaba tener que consultar varios grupos diferentes de agentes durante el verano, pero dentro de seis semanas había firmado con mi agente, Caitlin Blasdell, y estaba revisando las notas de ABOVE para que esté listo para los editores.
Una vez hecho esto, que era la misma historia: Caitlin, envio a los editores que sentío que les gustaria, y esperamos. En abril de 2009, tuvimos nuestra carta de aceptación.
Así que como he dicho: una muy estándar, tipo de camino aburrido en la publicación!
-¿Que quiere decir para Leah Bobet escribir?
Cosas distintas, en diferentes días. A veces es sólo un trabajo que tengo que hacer, a veces es que no hay nada en el mundo para mi sino, las palabras, y tal vez el teclado, y es trascendente. De cualquier forma, es una de esas cosas fundamentales que me hace a mí misma. Si yo no lo hago, me gustaría ser una persona muy diferente. Aunque es una respuesta escamosa, es como respirar o comer: es lo que hago. Los perros ladran, los pájaros cantan, y yo escribo.
-Qué libro le recomendaría a alguien que quiere empezar a leer a Leah Bobet?
Bueno, sólo hay uno tan lejos! Así que supongo que si usted quiere leer algun libro, ABOVE, lo es. Pero para las personas que estén interesados en historias cortas, tanto en "Stay", en los cuentos de enfriamiento, que es una antología de ficción canadiense de terror literario, y "Bell, Book, and Candle" en Clockwork Phoenix, una antología de fantasía, son buenos lugares para comenzar. Se trata de un niño que vive bajo tierra, una niña con alas de abeja, los crímenes de guerra, revisionista de la historia, y lo lejos que puedes ir a salvar a la persona que amas.
-Acerca de la bella y fantastica portada: ¿Puede decirnos si eligió a uno de los personajes ¿Qué puede decirnos al respecto?
Por desgracia (¡o tal vez afortunadamente) los autores no pueden escoger su propia portada: es algo que el departamento de un editor de arte trabaja duro con un artista. De vez en cuando me hizo una pregunta o dos (si el pelo de Ariel era rizado o recto, o como me había imaginado las alas buscando al escribir el libro), pero sobre todo, el departamento de arte y el artista, Nathalia Suellen, que trabajó juntamente y me enteré después. Fue una buena sorpresa, que es algo increíble!
La chica de la portada es uno de los personajes: Ariel, la chica que protagonista de la novela, Mathew, está enamorado de ella. Ella cambia de forma en una abeja, cuando está asustada o enfadada, y cuando se convierte de nuevo en una niña, las alas son la última cosa que se van: crecen mucho con ella y caen por su espalda.
-Cómo se te ocurrió la idea de lo Above (un sueño ...)? ¿Qué tipo de historia se puede leer?
Había tres o cuatro elementos que se unieron para formar la idea de ABOVE. El primero fue la lectura de un ensayo de Eli Clare llamado: Exile and Pride , que kei en un curso en una clase de filosofía en el tercer año de mi carrera universitaria. El autor describe cómo fue su discapacidad diagnosticada, y hay un párrafo acerca de tener que estar quieto, apenas vestido y con dolor, bajo las luces brillantes , mientras que el médico utiliza el diagnóstico para enseñar a los estudiantes de medicina. Es una de las piezas más eficaces de la escritura que he leído nunca: está lleno de vergüenza y de visualización y el dolor, me golpeó justo en mis ojos.
-La segunda cosa que estaba recibiendo fue una especie de molestia con el cliché sobre todos los marginados que viven bajo tierra y cómo se tratan en la ficción y la televisión. Por un lado, hay un montón de gente que quisiera tener mejores razones para vivir fuera de la sociedad en un lugar seguro, un lugar donde no estan marginados o discriminados, no sólo las personas con mutaciones imaginarias. Que viven bajo tierra no sería divertido o fácil: programas de televisión que muchos dicen de tecnología fiable y suelos de mármol y las personas que estan sospechosamente con una vida limpia en secreto. En realidad, estarías robando comida enlatada todo el tiempo y cada resfriado se convierteria en neumonía.
-La tercera cosa fue algo que yo había estado pensando durante algun tiempo: cuando uno deja de intentar salvar a alguien de ellos mismos. Cuando constantemente rescatar a alguien, diciendo que esta bien, su apoyo y tomarse el tiempo para ayudar en realidad no significa que conseguiría mejor, pero que acababa de tirar en problemas que ninguno de los dos podía salir.
Esas tres cosas se juntaron una vez que finalmente consiguió una pista de la voz narrativa de Mathew, y al mismo tiempo una gran cantidad de otros temas entraron en el libro más tarde - por ejemplo, asegurándose de que cada personaje que aparece fuera discriminado de alguna manera, para explorar todas las cosas que hacemos el uno al otro - eso fue suficiente para empezar.
-Qué fue lo más difícil de lo anterior: la caracterización, la documentación, el diálogo, un buen comienzo o el final?
De hecho, algunos de los contenidos emocionales! Algunas cosas duras pasan en ABOVE, y algunas cosas muy malas, y algunos de ellos realmente no quieren hacer a los personajes. Algunos de ellos acaba de golpear un poco demasiado cerca de casa para mí. De cualquier manera, tenía que resolver un montón de mis propios sentimientos para escribir el libro de manera limpia y correcta.
Además, el elenco de personajes que tengo, donde cada uno tiene una discapacidad física o una enfermedad mental o trauma de algún tipo, significaba estar muy conscientes de que mientras yo estaba escribiendo personajes de ficción, un montón de personas que lean el libro bien podrían estar viendose a sí mismos allí. Fue muy importante para mí tener cuidado de que no fuese asi, sin darse cuenta, dejando en estereotipos irreflexivos.
-¿Cómo luchas contra el bloqueo del escritor?
Podría ser una respuesta impopular, pero no, la verdad. Tengo muchas cosas en mi vida: yo trabajo a tiempo completo, edito y publico una revista trimestral en línea, Ideomancer Speculative Fiction, estoy interesada en la política local municipal y la política alimentaria, que unidos, cocinar comidas elaboradas realmente loco, ir a todo tipo de conciertos y eventos artísticos, tomar clases de danza del vientre, leer unos cuantos libros a la semana, cazas del tesoro , y aún así tengo tiempo para pasar el rato con mis amigos y mantener mi casa limpia. Si no estoy escribiendo un poco, me imagino que no tengo nada importante que decir justo en ese momento, y paso a otro proyecto por un tiempo. Una de las cosas que he aprendido sobre mi,en el propio proceso en los últimos diez años es que la escritura siempre vuelve, justo cuando estás lista. Y eso está bien, y no tenemos nada de que preocuparnos.
-¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo y tu rutina diaria mientras escribes?
Mi rutina no es ni siquiera la de todos los días - ver todas las cosas en la última pregunta! Pero cuando estoy trabajando en algo, sobre todo me voy a sentar con una taza de té, conseguir todos mis distracciones fuera del camino (Facebook, mensajería instantánea, facturas pendientes de pago), así que no tengo ninguna excusa para parar, encontrar música adecuada, y sólo tiene que ir. Desde que esperar hasta que las palabras están ahí para mí, o hasta que estén lo suficientemente cerca y hacerlas fluir , sin tener que forzarlas, realmente no tengo manera de forzarlas. Cuando estoy en medio de un buen proyecto, sin embargo, quiero trabajar en eso todo el tiempo, así que me apriete por escrito entre las cosas que tengo que hacer o quedarme hasta tarde. Algunos de mis mejores trabajos los hice en una de la mañana, o en la hora del almuerzo.
Uno de los upsides de esperar hasta que mi cerebro está listo para escribir en vez de ir en busca de palabras para escribir es que cuando una historia o un capítulo que sale, es muy limpio y pulido. Ya he hecho todo el trabajo en mi cabeza, el pensamiento a través de por qué las cosas deben estar donde están, incluso antes de poner una palabra hacia abajo. Esto significa que la necesidad de revisar menos, en comparación con algunos de mis amigos, que puedan trabajar con mayor regularidad y rapidez, pero tiene que hacer más proyectos, porque trabajan las cosas en la página. Son sólo dos formas diferentes de trabajar, pero eso es una de las ventajas.
-Para los lectores españoles: ¿Donde se pueden ver las noticias?
Sigo la primera página de mi sitio web - http://www.leahbobet.com - y mi página de fans en Facebook actualizadas con grandes noticia, como traducciones o nuevas ventas. Pero el día a día cosas - lo que estoy trabajando, cosas divertidas que cocinaba, los pensamientos de las embarcaciones de la política o similares - está en mi blog, en http://leahbobet.livejournal.com. También estoy en Twitter, pero eso es sobre todo para hablar con mis amigos, y no tanto por la publicación de noticias.
-¿Te gustaría decir algo a los lectores españoles?
Gracias! Dice cosas maravillosas acerca de lo mucho que aman los libros que estás hablando y leyendo en un segundo o tercer idioma, y no sólo la primera. Como alguien que habla una lengua segunda y tercera, pero muy mal en ambos casos, ese tipo de dedicación es realmente increíble, y realmente admirable.
(También, me gustaría algunas recomendaciones para los grandes novelas en español!)
