The world of Mortal Instruments series is so abstract, it's just not like anything else out there. How did you come up with all of the ideas and concepts for the characters and their abilities and everything?

I knew that I wanted to write a book based on angel and demon mythology and concepts of good and evil drawn from the Bible, Paradise Lost, and Dante's Divine Comedy. I knew I wanted holy warriors who were part angel, and that they would fight demons. (Where I got that idea, I don't know. Eventually tracing ideas backward turns into trying to figure out what happened before the Big Bang, so to speak.) But to keep everything from being too black and white, I needed Downworlders, who exist in between those two factions, and whose supernatural powers are explained by the existence of demons and angels — they have to be, or they wouldn't fit into the overall world. As for the tattoo magic and how it works, I got the idea in a tattoo store one day with a friend of mine who worked there. She later designed the runes you can find on my website.

Are you planning on writing more books for the mortal instuments series?

Right now there's the fourth book in the series planned, City of Fallen Angels. It's supposed to come out in March, 2011. You can find out more about it here: http://www.cassandraclare.com/cms/faqs#fallen Beyond that, I don't have definite plans for more MI books.

When is the next book coming out?

Well, my next book is The Clockwork Angel. It's the first book in the prequel series to the Mortal Instruments and takes place in London, in 1878. It deals with the ancestors of Clary and Jace and that group, and Magnus Bane is in it. It's going to be released this year, August 31st.

Was there any significance to why Max had to be the one to die, or was it just purely picking and choosing? I mean, there are a lot of characters, why Max?

It was always going to be Max. Precisely because he's too young to be involved in the actual fighting. There's a big difference between dying in battle when you're a soldier and being the collateral damage of a war. Max's death serves to underline how terrible war is, how it destroys those not involved as well as those involved. Also, it truly underlines how bad Jonathan really is.

Do you know how the Mortal Instruments series will end, or does it change as you write them?

I always knew how they would end. The *way* things happen can change, but not the things that happen themselves.

Is there any reason why you name your characters what they are named, IE Clary, Jace, Alex Isabelle?

Clary is named after a friend of mine. Max and Isabelle are named for my grandparents. Jace's name evolved out of my need for a name that could also be initials, since it's a plot point! And Alec is just a name I like.

Who was the most enjoyable character to write?

Magnus is always the most fun because he's like a party wherever he goes.

If there was a City of Bones movie, who would play Jace and Clary in your opinion, we know you don't get to chose.

I prefer not picking favorites — I worry that anyone I did pick would become some kind of "official choice", and I don't want that, plus it would be awkward if they ever did make a movie and cast someone else, for me to feel like the cast knew they weren't my first choice! (Not that it matters what I think, but still.) I do have a page on my website with my fans' most prevalent picks, though.

If you could rewrite the series, is there anything you would change?

You can't think about that stuff; that way lies madness! I try to think instead about what I've learned from the writing in my past and how I want to apply to to what I will write next.
