Nació en Shepherds Bush en 1971. Hijo único, fue criado en Hounslow, Londres oeste, pero desde entonces es a Ham en Surrey.

-What part of the creative process was more difficult to find : characterization, documentation, dialogue, a beginning or the end?
To be honest, the hardest part was actually writing the book! I knew what the end was going to be because I based it on the Halicarnassus stele of Amazon and Achillia, so they would both have to live and be freed. But finding the time to write something coherent was pretty difficult – it takes ages to write a book if you have a full time job and a family, that’s for sure!
Characterisation was something I did on the fly apart from Lysandra (or Lissandra as she is the Spanish language). I knew that I didn’t want to make her a very nice person, because I wanted to be true to the background I had created for her. I mean, she comes from this “supremacist” place where she’s taught that here people are better than everyone else so with that grounding, she had to come across as pretty arrogant and arrogance isn’t a nice trait. I knew also that despite being very well educated, living such a cloistered lifestyle would make her very gullible, so it was good fun writing her thinking that she’s really clever whereas the other characters (like Frontinus or Balbus) are getting her to do just what they want.
I knew that I didn’t want to make any one person all good or all bad (well apart from Nastasen, but on retrospect, I think I overdid it there a bit), so Sorina isn’t really a baddie, she’s more of an antagonist: she has her own views, her own aims and her own agenda. I tried to do that with all the characters, really. I think I was more successful in some cases than others and I get different emails from people saying who they liked best, but the favourites seem to be Varia the slave girl and Catuvolcos, the Gaulish trainer.
Dialogue was hard for Lysandra because I wanted to get across that Spartans had a strong almost anachronistic accent, so when I wrote her I never once used an abbreviation: so she never says thinks like “I’ll” or “we’ve” or anything like that. She always says “I will”, “we have” and so forth. Some people who read the book got it, other’s just thought I was writing crap dialogue!
I’m not sure what you mean by “documentation” here, but I’m guessing its research. I already had a decent grounding in ancient history and I just had to research the various aspects of the book. Amy Zoll’s book (also called “Gladiatrix”) was really helpful as was Alan Baker’s “The gladiator: the secret history of Rome's warrior slaves.” I also relied heavily on Paul Cartledge’s “Hellenistic and Roman Sparta.”
-I know, that your working out on the second part of "Gladiadora" Can you say a small advance? Will be the history or Lissandra be free oror will a different story?
It’s still about Lysandra. It takes place six years after “Gladiatrix” and everything has changed. Lysandra is no longer fighting and as turned Balbus’s old ludus into a pantheon for the gods. She has all these priestesses working there for the different deities and is making a fortune from the various “cottage industries” that have sprung up there. You know, the Priestesses of Hephaestus make ironworks, the Priestesses of Ares and Athene are still in the arena, the Priestesses of Aphrodite are…highly sought after for different reasons. Lysandra’s also started investing in trade where most of her money comes from.
But she’s has changed too – I can’t really go into how she’s changed, though.
However, she receives a summons from Rome to fight in a spectacle against the Roman Champion Aemilia Illeana – who fights under the name of Aesalon Nocturna (in a nod to David Gemmell – it means “Midnight Falcon” and that was the title of one of his gladiatorial books), so she has to go off to Rome and fight once again. Hence – the title “Roma Victrix.” It’s really Illeana’s story as much as it is Lysandra’s to be honest.
What I can say is that it’s a lot different to “Gladiatrix.” I couldn’t have a story with Lysandra as the champion now and a young barbarian girl comes to the ludus to challenge her and basically rehash the first book.
Not sure if that’s a good idea, but I’ll find out when I get it to the publisher!
- If you were told to describe the book in one phrase, what would you choose for the book?
-I don’t know…that’s a really hard one. I think Publisher’s Weekly’s description was really funny – “Think girls gone wild…with swords!”
- Have you though about writing a different type of novel or continue with the same type of novel already published?
-I’ve definitely thought about writing another kind of novel – and I will when I’ve finished the next book. I’d like to do some heroic fantasy along the lines of David Gemmell, really because I like historical setting, but it’s difficult to do certain things because you always have to stick to the facts. With fantasy of any sort, you have a much broader canvass to paint on, but then you have to create the world and sort of know what it looks and where things are, which is a big job in itself.
But that’s definitely my next thing – heroic fantasy.
-To write the book ,Did you travel to have a better vision of ancient Rome and Greece ? How did you research?
-I’ve been to Athens and Rome, yes. But I already had a good grounding in Ancient History – I’ve been interested in it since I was able to read. Research was reading a lot of specific books, watching movies and the History Channel. I also ordered the Discovery Channel DVD called “Gladiatrix” which was pretty good – it had Lucy Lawless narrating it. You couldn’t get it in England, I think I had to order it from Thailand or something like that.
-Thanks to your biography of your website, you joined of the group Ludus Gladiatorius, where you learned to fight as a gladiator of Thracian style, and kickboxing, Do you helped to visualize the fights into "gladiadoras" that appear in the book?
-Well, I definitely joined Ludus to learn how to fight as a gladiator yes. It was important because the different styles of fighting presented different problems for the fighters to overcome, so it really helped.
I had a note from a female re-enactor from Germany who said that I got the combat correct, so I was pretty pleased with that.
The kickboxing and kung fu helped – I keep saying I’m going to get back into that, so I really should, but I think having an idea of how to move was useful, yes. I used to stand in my room with fake swords choreographing moves to see if the fight would work. I guess it looked pretty stupid, but if it came out OK on the page in the end, that’s the main thing.
-What can you say about the book's cover, you can choose the illustrator or can you help in the process of creation? Would you say if the girl on the cover is Lissandra?
-I really had nothing to do with the cover (thank goodness, I have no design sense whatsoever!) – it was designed by a company called Black Sheep in the UK. The girl on the cover is definitely Lysandra and it shows what a great design house Black Sheep are because they actually read the book and got her eye-colour correct - or maybe they asked the publisher, but either way, it worked out brilliantly. Many people have commented on the cover and I’d say that it’s helped sales immensely.
-Would you comment if you have an offer to carry the book to the big or small screen? Would you like take care of the script, choice of actors.... From it?
-We had one email from a studio in Hollywood, but they decided not go for it in the end which is a shame. Of course, it’s pretty much every writer’s dream to have their work turned into a movie or a telly programme and I’m no different. And, yes, I’d love to be involved in some capacity - that would be really exciting.
Choice of actors – not sure I’d get a say to be honest, but in a fantasy world made real, I’d love it if Paul WS Anderson directed it and had Milla Jovovitch as Lysandra: Ok, she’s not 19, but when I saw her in Aeon Flux with her black hair and swords, I was dancing around the front room saying “That’s Lysandra, that’s Lysandra.” Then again, I’d probably had too much Rioja or something like that. But she definitely had the look I imagined for Lysandra.
I always “cast” the book in my head (and I reckon every writer does, but just won’t admit it), so in the next one (“Roma Victrix”), I’ve got Milla Jovovitch and Angelina Jolie in it. That’d be a good film, wouldn’t it!
-Would you say ,what is your favourite stage in ancient Rome and Greece ? and the characters of this that you get more attention?
-I really like the Persian War period with the Spartans and all that stuff. When I was a kid, I saw “The Three Hundred Spartans” on the telly and that was what ignited my interest in history. I also think Alexander and the period after his conquests (the Hellenistic Period) are really fascinating. The end of the Hellenistic period is great because it pits the Macedonians against the Romans. I always wonder who would have won if both armies were at their prime and peak, but by that time the Macedonian phalanx was in severe decline where as the Roman army really was a lean, mean fighting machine.
There are so many characters – I think Alexander was fascinating as was Caesar. Hannibal as well is very interesting – it’s strange how he was defeated yet he’s much more famous that Scipio, the guy that beat him in the end. A bit like Napoleon I guess – Wellington defeated him but Napoleon is regarded as one of history’s great generals which is a bit unfair on Wellington I think. Maybe Napoleon had better publicists – he’s certainly had the better apologists, that’s for sure!
-What would you do when you get stuck with an idea?
Aside from drinking heavily, I usually just keep making stuff up and deleting it till something works.
I don’t write regularly because I have a full time job, family and other things to do…and I don’t really enjoy writing when I have the time to write – which is normally in the evenings and at weekends. I work best during the day, and during the day I’m at work! That’s a disadvantage, but on the other hand, I always think of things to do next in the book (when I’m supposed to be working…like now, for instance – this interview is being done on office time, but if their systems are going to go down, who am I to complain?).
I’m not a big planner of books: I have an idea of what I want to happen and then I just go from there. I tried to map out this book and wasted loads of time doing it, so now I just kind of go with the flow. “Gladiatrix” was written like that and sometimes it works out for the best. For instance – I was going to have Lysandra fight Nastasen, but then I realised that she’d just fought Hildreth and was going to fight Sorina, and this was just going be another fight. So from that, I had the whole idea about Sorina murdering him and doing it to fight a psychological war against Lysandra. People have said it was an unexpected plot-twist and it was, because even I didn’t expect it!
- If you were on a desert island, what book would you like to come with you? And that movie would you like to take?
I’d take “The Light Bearer” by Donna Gillespie. It’s a brilliant novel first and foremost and better, it’s about a gladiatrix called “Auriane.” Donna inspired me to write to be honest – reading that book was a life-changing experience for me (and pretty much anyone who’s read it will say the same). I’ve read it so many times, but I still go back to it. It’s depressing though, because I realise that I’m never going to be that good.
I really believe that in a few years, “The Light Bearer” will be recognised as one of the great novels of the 20th Century. It really is that good.

Movies – I’d take “Superman the Movie” – it’s my favourite film of all time. That or Rocky IV –that’s also great. Oh, no! I’m supposed say “Gladiator” here, aren’t I? Well, I loved that too. Can’t I just take 100s of DVDs? I’m a huge movie buff, what can I say!

-Para ser honesto, la parte más difícil fue en realidad escribir el libro! Yo sabía lo que al final iba a ser porque lo basè en la estela de Amazon y Halicarnaso Achillia, por lo que sería , lo que tienen que vivir para ser puestos en libertad. Pero encontrar el tiempo para escribir algo coherente fue bastante difícil - se tarda un siglo en escribir un libro, si tienes un trabajo a tiempo completo y una familia, eso es seguro!
La Caracterización fue algo que hice sobre la marcha, aparte de Lisandra (o Lissandra como es la lengua española). Yo sabía que no quería hacer de ella una persona muy agradable, porque quería ser fiel a los antecedentes que había creado para ella. Quiero decir, que proviene de esta "supremacía"El lugar donde proviene se la enseña que aquí la gente es mejor que los demás, de manera bastante arrogante y no es un buen rasgo para presentar. Sabía también que a pesar de estar muy bien educados, que viven un estilo de vida de clausura la haría muy real, así que fue muy divertido de escribir su pensamiento ya que ella es realmente inteligente, mientras que los otros personajes (como Frontino o Balbo) pueden llegar a hacer lo que que quieren.
Yo sabía que no quería hacer una sola persona para todo lo bueno o todo es malo (malo, aparte de Nastasen, pero en retrospectiva, creo que no me había excedido un poco), por lo que Sorina no es realmente una villana, es más una antagonista: ella tiene sus propios puntos de vista, sus propios objetivos y su propia agenda. Traté de hacerlo con todos los personajes, de verdad. Creo que tuve más éxito en algunos casos que en otros y he conseguido diferentes correos electrónicos de personas diciendo que les gustaban más, la esclava Varia y Catuvolcos, el entrenador galo.

- Definitivamente he pensado en escribir otro tipo de novela - y cuando haya terminado el libro siguiente. Me gustaría hacer algo de fantasía heroica en la línea de David Gemmell, de verdad, porque me gusta el marco histórico, pero es difícil hacer ciertas cosas porque siempre tienes que atenerte a los hechos. Con la fantasía de cualquier tipo, tiene un escrutinio mucho más amplio para pintar, pero luego se va a crear el mundo y la suerte de saber lo que se ve y dónde están las cosas, que es un gran trabajo en sí mismo.

Y, sí, me encantaría participar de alguna forma- que sería muy emocionante.

-A mi me gusta el período persa guerra con los espartanos y todo eso. Cuando yo era niño, vi "Los trescientos espartanos" en la tele y eso era lo que encendió mi interés en la historia. También creo que Alejandro y el período posterior a sus conquistas (el "Periodo helenístico) son realmente fascinantes. El final del período helenístico es grande porque enfrenta a los macedonios contra los romanos. Siempre me pregunto que habrían ganado si ambos ejércitos estaban en su mejor momento , pero en ese momento la falange macedonia fue reducida notablemente contra el ejército romano
Hay tantos personajes - Creo que Alejandro era fascinante como fue César. Aníbal, así es muy interesante - que es extraño cómo fue derrotado sin embargo, es mucho más famoso que Escipión, el tipo que le ganó en el final. Un poco como Napoleón I Guess - Wellington lo derrotó pero Napoleón es considerado como uno de los grandes generales de la historia que es un poco injusto, en Wellington, creo. Yo no escribo con regularidad porque tengo un trabajo de tiempo completo, la familia y otras cosas que hacer ... y realmente no me gusta escribir cuando tengo el tiempo para escribir - que normalmente es por las tardes y los fines de semana. Yo mejor trabajo durante el día, y durante el día estoy en el trabajo! Yo no soy un gran planificador de libros: Tengo una idea de lo que quiero que suceda y entonces sólo tiene que ir de allí. Traté de planear este libro y la pérdida de un montón de tiempo en hacerlo, así que ahora solo tipo de ir con la corriente. "Gladiadora" fue escrito como que a veces funciona para bien. Por ejemplo - que iba a tener Lysandra una lucha con Nastasen , pero luego me di cuenta de que había luchado solo Hildreth y que iba a luchar Sorina, y esto sólo iba ser otra pelea. Así que de eso, tuve la idea acerca de Sorina y lo hace para luchar en una guerra psicológica contra Lisandra. La gente ha dicho que era un complot inesperado giro y así fue, porque ni siquiera yo me lo esperaba!

-Tomaría "El Portador de la Luz" por Donna Gillespie. Es una novela brillante, ante todo, y mejor, se trata de una gladiadora llamada "Auriane." Donna me inspiró a escribir para ser honesto - lectura de ese libro fue una experiencia que cambia la vida para mí (y bonito mucho cualquier persona que haya leído lo que dicen que el mismo). Lo he leído tantas veces, pero todavía volver a ella. Es deprimente, sin embargo, porque me doy cuenta que yo nunca voy a ser tan bueno.
Realmente creo que en pocos años, "El Portador de la Luz" será reconocido como una de las grandes novelas del siglo 20. Realmente es muy bueno.
